Résumé
samples, templates, tips, books, e-Books, special reports.... There
are so many "how-to" books available, you'd think bookstores would
be buried by these titles. But hold on, the info avalanche is just
starting to roll. The real question is, how do you sort through
the mountain of resources to find the few nuggets that must be out
there?
At the
risk of tossing more rocks onto the rubble, I've included my own
take on résumés and cover letters elsewhere on this
site. If you want more information, you can check out two resources
(below) that I recommend and at the bottom of this page,
three best-selling books that are considered the "gold standard."
As I've
said elsewhere, there are advantages to buying your Internet products
from providers with a major presence on the net. That's the case
with The Vault, one of the largest career portals you can find.
Get the inside scoop on top careers and companies with the Vault
Career Library.
The Vault
offers one of the most complete e-Book career libraries you will
find. They offer several books that may interest you: "Vault
Guide to Résumés, Cover Letters, and Interviews"
(138 pages -- $14.95) and the "Vault Guide to Starting Your
Own Business" (176 pages, -- $19.95)
You'll
also find dozens of career guides covering dozens of different career
tracks. A few examples: "Career Guide to Advertising & PR",
"Guide to Capitol Hill Careers," "Guide to the Fashion
Industry," "Career Guide to Media and Entertainment,"
"Career Guide to Marketing & Brand Management," "Guide
to Real Estate Careers."
They've
devoted multiple books to several professions including Finance
Career Guides (9 titles), Law Career Guides (10 titles), Consulting
Career Guides (7 titles).
Furthermore,
they offer 50-page PDF or spiral-bound employer profiles on scores
of top employers. Each PDF includes: history and business description;
recent news; insider look at company culture, pay, hours and more;
hiring process, including interview questions; job descriptions
and career path. As part of your corporate research, this is "must-have"
information.
The problem
with most Internet portals is that it's so easy to get lost once
you start to follow a set of links. Career portals are much the
same. If I have a concern about The Vault, it's because they're
too big and crowded. So here's what I recommend: go directly to
their books page where you'll find all of the above, then browse
through their extensive site for fun: Get the inside scoop on top
careers and companies with the Vault
Career Library.
Perhaps
the exact opposite of the Vault, this one-page web site offers résumé
and cover letter templates you can alter to suit your own profile:
Sample Résumés Online: Click
Here!
They offer
résumé templates in these areas:
Graduate Résumés
Management Résumés
Service Résumés
Technical Résumés
Desk Job Résumés
If you're
in a hurry, you can download the templates, tweak them to suit your
own profile and be good to go in about half an hour. They also provide
a 100% money-back guarantee, and two bonus books: "Guide to a Winning
Résumé" and "Interview Secrets Revealed." Total
price for the whole package is $24.97.
One last
thing: if you like personal service, I can testify that Ronan Kennedy,
Manager for Sample Résumés Online, can go the extra
distance. He e-mailed me three times within two weeks to see how
I was getting along with his product. I doubt that would happen
with some of the monster portals out there. If you want to find
out more, Click
Here!
If you're
like me and you prefer hard-copy résumé and cover
letter books rather than e-Books, consider the three bestsellers
below. You can buy them at most bookstores or order them
online from Half.com. I've created links from here to eBay's book
retailers. Click here to Find great deals on books: eBay!
